Meet Your Guide
I’m Chris Ridmann, a professional climbing guide with over 19 years of experience across alpine, ice, and rock routes. My background as a software engineer taught me how to think with precision and plan for the unexpected—and it’s this mindset I bring to every client climb.
From high alpine objectives in the Alps and Cascades to technical ice in Colorado and single-pitch routes in the Gunks, I’ve spent nearly two decades learning what good systems, decision-making, and calm leadership can do on the wall.
As an AMGA Apprentice Rock Guide, Single Pitch Instructor, and Wilderness First Responder, I guide with a focus on education and confidence-building. Whether you’re just starting or chasing a dream route, I’m here to support your growth and help you have a meaningful experience in the mountains.

Everything You Want to Know Before the Climb
-
I guide a range of trips — from single-pitch outings for beginners to multi-pitch objectives for experienced climbers. Whether you’re looking to learn the fundamentals of outdoor climbing, refine your trad skills, or tackle a big mountain route, I’ll tailor the experience to your goals and comfort level.
My goal is to become a fully certified IFMGA Guide which would allow me to guide anywhere in the world. Until then, I take seriously the scope of practice for my current level of certification with the AMGA. If you are interested in pursuing an objective outside that scope, I’m happy to refer you to a colleague!
For New York climbing, I am a guide with Alpine Endeavors LLC.

Not at all! I regularly work with first-time climbers and teach the essential skills you’ll need to climb safely and confidently. If you already have experience, I can design a day that pushes your technical and mental limits — whether that means leading trad pitches, building anchors, or moving efficiently in the alpine.
-
Every day is customized to you, but typically we’ll meet early, go over gear and safety systems, then head out for a full day of climbing. I focus on helping you gain skills and confidence while keeping the day fun, educational, and goal-oriented.
-
You’ll receive a detailed gear list before your trip, but generally you’ll want to bring climbing shoes, a harness, helmet, weather-appropriate layers, sun protection, food, and plenty of water. I can provide recommendations based on the season and location.
-
We’ll stay flexible — safety always comes first. If conditions aren’t suitable for climbing, we’ll reschedule or adjust the objective. In some cases, I offer skills clinics, anchor building sessions, or rescue training indoors as alternatives.
-
Yes! Most trips are private, meaning you or your group will have my full attention. I also guide small groups and instructional clinics for friends, families, or teams looking to learn together.
-
Yes! I offer private instruction in topics like trad leading, anchor building, multipitch efficiency, rope management, and rescue skills. Instructional days are ideal if you’re looking to become a more independent climber or prepare for bigger alpine climbs.
-
Absolutely. If you’ve got a dream route or mountain in mind — like Mount Rainier, the Grand Teton, or the Casual Route of Longs Peak — I can design a progression plan to build the necessary fitness, technical skills, and confidence.
